The perfect pastime for petrolheads.
The Slot Car Hobby
Slot car racing has a history nearly as long as the automobile itself, but its popularity exploded in the 1960s with the rise of commercial venues and club racing. After the decline of club venues, the hobby evolved into a home entertainment trend in the 1980s. It surged again in the 1990s, becoming a collector’s passion when FLY Model Cars introduced die-cast-level detailing, historic race car provenance, and true-to-life motor placement.
In the early 2000s, brands like Slot.it and other hobby-grade manufacturers gained traction, while home set brands began exploring new digital solutions.
Today, digital slot car racing has matured. Basic systems allow up to six cars to compete on two lanes, with multiple overtaking opportunities each lap. Cars can switch lanes at crossovers to pass rivals and even stop in pit lanes for fuel.
Modern digital systems simulate fuel consumption, pit stop strategy, weather conditions, damage, ghost and pace cars, advanced timing, and other features that add layers of strategy to the race. You can recreate a full endurance event—much like in eSports—but with physical scale model race cars that require tuning and maintenance to perform at their best.
Old-school analog slot car racing remains popular, offering a more relaxed and meditative experience compared to the fast-paced digital format. In analog racing, you compete against yourself and the clock, striving for ultimate car control—much like a qualifying session—aiming for the perfect lap time and consistent performance over a set number of laps.
Slot Car Collecting
I came into this hoby in the early 2000’s (when we first got kids) and got hooked on the quality, details and historic accuracy of the cars. Being a petrolhead I soon got hooked and have raced, tuned and collected Slot Cars since.
Most of the collection are Analog Slot Cars for collecting, no-mag tuning and racing on scenic Scalextric tracks. Digital cars are raced with friends and family on the MSCH Carrera Digital Track.
This website is an effort to catalog my collection, and pherhaps spread some tips and tricks and promote the hobby.
I am in the process of listing slot cars, tracks, parts and scenery items. It is mostly in 1:32 scale but also some 1:43 scale and 1:24 scale cars, tracks and model kits.
